Summary:
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for a range of metering activities for utility customers including connecting/disconnecting water service; reading and recording usages; and performing maintenance and repairs of meters.
This position requires working outdoors and sitting in a city vehicle for long periods at a time, rotating on call duties and subject to afterhours call out for emergency situations.

EDUCATION AND
Experience:
High school diploma or GED and experience working with customers, construction, or field experience.
License and Certifications:
This position requires Class C Groundwater, or the ability to obtain within 3 years of employment date in accordance with TCEQ licensing requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
Other duties may be assigned:
Accurately read and record meter readings for residential and commercial accounts.
Perform disconnects and reconnects for nonpayment accounts.
Monitor all unusual instances, high reads, low reads, verify readings in cases where consumption appears to be abnormal, and record/report possible records for fluctuations.
Monitor meters and equipment for damage, faults, unauthorized use, and accuracy.
Conduct leak checks and advise customers of results.
Perform data logs Meter installations Responsible for the safe operation, care and appearance of assigned vehicle and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge and understanding of safety precautions while working in and around traffic.
Knowledge of City ordinances and State/Federal regulations Skilled in providing exceptional customer service.
Ability to resolve problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment and professionalism.
Ability to communicate effectively and with the public and other City employees.
Ability to follow instructions and complete assignments.
Ability to be productive without supervision.
Ability to quickly absorb knowledge of methods, practices, and terminology, used in the field.

In a typical work setting, the Meter Reader will:
Interpersonal Relationships Have a high level of social contact working closely with other office staff and the public.
Communicate with people daily by telephone, e-mail, and in person.
May be subjected to irate members of the public, who may use profanity.
Hours/Travel Usually works a standard 40-hour week, 5 days per week but may be required to work evenings or weekends to meet deadlines or for special projects/assignments.
This position includes on-call responsibilities on a rotational basis.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions Be regularly required to lift, move or carry objects over 100 pounds; utilize feet and legs or hands and arms; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or navigating narrow, slippery or moving surfaces; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs; move about on hands and knees or hands and feet; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; and to reach with hands and arms.
While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to insects, snakes, rodents, fumes, airborne particles, toxins or caustic substances, excessive noise, traffic, and dampness/humidity and weather changes.
Some exposure to dust, fumes, and loud noises that are routinely encountered in utility maintenance operations, using proper safety precautions.
Work long hours in all types of weather under adverse/hazardous conditions for extended periods of time.
Works outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather.
Disaster Service Workers Clause In the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers.
Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees' normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.
