Summary:
Under general supervision of the Manager of Library Services, this position is responsible for a high level of customer service during daily library operations.
The Circulation Clerk will greet patrons, use automated circulation system for intake and distribution of library materials.
Assist with keeping areas clean, presentable, writing reports, facilitating special programs and other library services as needed.

Position will not have direct supervision over other staff.
EDUCATION AND
Experience:
HS Diploma/GED Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
Other duties may be assigned:
Provides customer services to the general public, library, city staff, and other work-related contacts as needed, whether in person, by phone or online platforms.
Using the automated circulation system, checks out/renews/reserves material; processes returns of library materials.
Collects overdue fines, charges, accepts donations and writes receipts as needed.
Maintains customer database in ILS Assist with shifting items on shelves, helps with collection maintenance projects, and inventories of said materials.
May assist with creating bulletin boards, newsletters, bookmarks, and other promotional materials.
Mends damaged books, videos, and other items as needed.
Works with and assists in training volunteers as needed.
Performs light custodial duties to ensure environment is inviting for visitors.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of methods, practices, and terminology used in library services.
Knowledge of basic information about City of Elgin programs and facilities.
Skilled in office interpersonal and telephone etiquette.
Skilled in communicating with adults and children.
Skilled in resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
Ability to utilize discretion and confidentially based on customer accounts information.
Ability to establish good relationships with organizations, schools, staff, and library patrons.
Ability to speak Spanish is preferred.

Work is confined mainly to an office setting, requires attire that is business casual, yet functional for movement (i.
e.
, sitting on the floor with children, connecting equipment near the computer terminal floors, working on bottom floor level shelves of library).
This position requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
This position may require you to carry, hold, lift, push or pull a minimum of 50 pounds.
High level of contact working closely with staff and the general public.
Communicate with people daily by telephone, e-mail, and in person.
May be subjected to irate members of the public, who may use profanity.
Hours/Travel Usually works a standard 40-hour week, 5 days per week but may be required to work evenings or weekends for special projects/assignments.
Always work indoors.
May travel by foot or vehicle to other City buildings.
Work close to other staff, frequently required to sit, and stand while using hands, arms, and fingers to reach and input data in systems.
Exposure to noise from close by departments, staff and public.
May lift and move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds.
Disaster Service Workers Clause In the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers.
Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees' normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
